for Mayor

Grande Prairie will be a connected

and supportive community.

Community Wellness Initiative

A healthy community is one where residents can live their lives productively and fruitfully, feel supported in their efforts, and are connected to their neighbours. Now, more than ever, we are feeling the effects of a disconnected community. Mental health affects all of us.

 As Mayor, I will advocate for a strategy that builds on our existing resources to increase residents’ sense of belonging and mental wellness.

Our City will aim to provide:

  • clean, safe physical environment of high quality (including housing quality);
  • a community that is stable and sustainable in the long term;
  • a strong, mutually supportive community for people of all races, faiths, and backgrounds;
  • connectedness with the past, with the cultural and biological heritage of residents and with other groups and individuals;
  • a high degree of participation in and control by the residents over the decisions affecting their lives, health and well-being;
  • the meeting of basic needs (food, water, shelter, income, safety and work) for all the city’s people;
  • a diverse, vital, and innovative economy

We accomplish this by:

1. Bringing together community groups – seniors, students, Indigenous and racialized residents, neighbourhood associations, non-profits, businesses – to identify what we need to improve our connection and mental well-being.

2. Thoughtful policies related to land use planning, neighbourhood planning, transportation, housing, and many other areas all influence the physical, social and economic environments in which we learn, work and play.

3. Emphasis on community connection and mental wellness –

  • what are the most significant threats to our community’s mental health and
  • what can we do to meet our future with optimism and confidence?

4. Grant funding stream for community-led initiatives that support wellness goals through events, programs, or services that

  • are quick-to-test and easily scalable if successful
  • have broad impact OR small but significant impact
  • encourage collaboration amongst groups
  • enhance capacity by inspiring innovation in existing resources
